Barn-dominiums are traditionally designed with a simplistic, rural-rustic, semi-industrial approach. However, they can be built to feel quite homey with their wood beams, natural detail, cathedral ceilings and stone work. Moreover, oversized windows, a second-floor loft overlooking the common area and a typically very wide-open floor plan add a modern flair to their rustic appeal.

These homeowners wanted to tip the modernity scale a bit more with its architecture and finishes.

The exterior design brings out a rustic modernness with its symmetrical shed roofs, bold-colored board and batten, and more selective touches of cedar and wood detail. 

Our interior design revolves around the aforementioned kitchen/dining/living area with a second floor loft. However, you must see what we did; it’s truly one of a kind. The common space vaults towards the second floor loft starting with a 14-foot wall, appropriately creating the exterior shed roof.

The three-sided windows, including the fully custom, oversized, angled kitchen window, flood the open common space with light. Our showstopping ceiling design starts covered with wood planks running front to back. We then added our lighting with a rectangle shape of black square can lights flanking the offset large globe pendants staggered through the entire space. The offset lights adds a bit of movement and dance to the geometric space.

On top of that is a fully tiled, tall kitchen wall, mirroring the opposing floor-to-ceiling fireplace stone wall with an oversized firebox. 

​

You’ll find some more architectural details throughout the home, such as the living room built-in matching the mud room built-ins and entry. Parents or guests can enjoy the first-floor suite with the family sleeping upstairs. The second-floor architecture is unique with the vaulted loft ceiling running perpendicular to the third bedroom through the master-suite vaulted ceiling.
